Cumberland Angles

While back on Cumberland we visited the church where JFK, Jr. got married. It has become a tourist attraction with daily tours. It's freshly painted and locked! Even though it was not my first visit, all of there charm had been removed. Luckily, the shack next door had enough charm for both of them.

Thirty Days Downtown

Thirty Days Downtown started as a way to force me to do 30 paintings in 30 days, en plein air (painting on location), of my hometown, Newnan, GA. I grew up less that half a mile from downtown, but my days were spent in downtown working for my dad at The Print Shoppe, eating candy from Kesslers, hanging out with my Dad at the Times-Herald and Brothers, charging grilled pimento cheese sandwiches at Lee-King and roaming the alleyways. My story is not unique, but my perspective is. Sometimes when you exist in a place, you just don't see it anymore... and I had stopped seeing downtown Newnan.

The challenge was to capture what inspired about the city as a painter, and a lot of that is what fascinated me when I was a boy. You will not see many buildings, shops or offices to in this collection, just a rare glimpse inside inside my head and to get a chance to see what I think is beautiful about my hometown downtown.

I had no trouble coming up with thirty paintings, I could paint hundreds more, my only problem was finding time to paint more of them en plein air... so, I will just have to do that another time!

The bridges, railroad tracks, ageless alleys, steeples, water tanks, the looming courthouse, cemeteries, and the fog.

The Thirty Days Downtown started on August 20th and will conclude with the showing and sale of the work at ArtWalk on September 20th at The Redneck Gourmet on the court square in downtown Newnan.

This was a locals only show, and has come and gone. It was marketed on Facebook and Instagram only. The following thirty posts are the pieces that were in the show.

The New Space

The New Space, 8x10, oil on canvas panel, $400 framed, landscape, PBS
This is the first a series of paintings that you will see coming from me during the school year called PBS paintings, or Paintings Before School. I will be doing a lot of paintings before my school day starts. I don't have the same schedule I had last year that gave me an entire afternoon, from 12:30 until whenever every other day, in the studio. I do have a free block every morning and I will be doing a great deal of plein air work on campus and in downtown Newnan for another project I will tell you about later.

The school just put in a traffic circle or roundabout and it has open the campus up to a filed that I have coveted for years. It has been the subject of many foggy morning photos and paintings. I now have vehicular access to this field, although that comes with it's own curse, and will be able to paint it much more frequently. It will not continue to be a beautiful field as it will become a new road in the next few years. I will continue to immortalize it in paint and film until and through that day that the road goes in.

Sunflower Field

Sunflower Field, oil on linen, 12x16, $775, framed, landscape, sunflowers
Painter friend, Sue Christensen, invited me down to my old stomping ground in Gay, GA for a day painting at a private sunflower field. This was my best effort for the day.

37 Drinks

37 Drinks, The Continental Club, Austin, Texas, oil on museum wrap, 36x48, urban, cityscape, signage, $5400
We met friends in Austin and stayed for a couple of days at the Hotel Saint Cecilia... owned by the same group that owns El Cosmico. No trailers here, just a great place to hang out. Record players in every posh room and a full vinyl library at your fingertips. Jim took me to The Continental Club the first night to see James McMurtry play his standing Wednesday night gig. It was a fantastic stop over and a great way to end a great trip...

Study, The Rolling Hills of Marfa

Study, The Rolling Hills of Marfa, 8x10, study, palette knife, oil on panel, $450, framed,  landscape
There is a ranch road just west of Marfa. You can take it straight to the border, or close to it. You actually have to go a few extra miles east to Presidio to make a legal crossing. The only problem is that it isn't paved and a 4x4 is a must. Luckily the new paint mobile has all of those bases covered. It is in the top 5 of drives I have ever taken. The scenery is unadulterated and WILD! During the 4 hour, 54 mile drive was saw only one other vehicle and that was pretty shocking. We did part of the drive again before we left.

Nocturne, Full Moon in Marfa

Full Moon in Marfa, nocturne, study, oil on InnerGlow panel, palette knife,
11x14, $625 framed, transportation, trailer
Great full moon while we were in Marfa, TX. This is a color study for a larger 30x40 I would like to do of this scene. If you ever get a chance to go to Marfa, stay at El Cosmico. It is an experience you won't soon forget!

Cloud Formations over Iron Mountain, 16x20, oil on linen, plein air, palette knife,

I am pretty sure I could paint the clouds in the West Texas Desert and never get tired of them. One of the most amazing skies I have ever seen!

Standing Guard

Standing Guard, 12x16, oil on linen, $775, framed, plein air, landscape, Big Bend
I became obsessed with the Century Plant, an agave that started to look like people out in the distance to me after a while. Sometimes they were in clusters, sometimes flying solo. They had just bloomed this sprint so they had these antennae like branches sticking out of the top. The seedpods and flowers that once adorned these naked branches could weigh up to 70lbs.

Survival Tactics, 11x14, oil on linen panel, plein air, $625, framed, landscape, windmill
Tons of these great old windmills around town and on the outskirts of Marathon. Glad to see the water situation has been modernized there.

Socked in at Iron Mountain, 12x16, oil on linen panel, $775 framed, landscape, plein air

This was the first piece I did when we got to Marathon, TX. It was cold, rainy and couldy... there were jackets involved in the making of this plein air piece.
