The color palette I used is a bit of a departure for me.... and I love it. It has given the mystery I have been looking for in my work. Since painting this, I have altered it and used it on a few more pieces. This was painted with yellow ochre, aliZarin crimson, burnt sienna, ultramarine and titanium white.

SOLD Neighbors Barn 300
Did this commission for a workmate of mine... I am a sucker for old barns and they know it. I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out, but I must say I think it turned out well. I am tackling a larger structure this weekend.

Along the Fence, 226
Decorator Jamie Elliot McPherson needs some of my landscape work for his Southern Living Dream House in Senioa, GA. Of course, I had none to show, so expect to see a few larger landscapes. This one was a challenge, it has been quite some time since I attempted a landscape, I even started this smaller one with the thought that maybe it would be a dust off for another larger and more successful one. This one makes me very happy.

Chatov Workshop, 202
Just finished a 3 day workshop with figure painter Marc Chatov, a third generation painter considered to be in the top 10 of portrait painters in the US. It was humbling, amazing, frustrating and refreshing.... sometimes, 3 days is not enough. That was the case here. Day 3 was great, day 1 and 2 were the days you try to shed your old habits and get in a place to try something new.
Marc had his work cut out for him with me. I DO NOT do the figure or faces, they scare me to death, which is why I signed up for the workshop. I never had drawing lessons in high school and in college they assumed that I already had drawing skills. Thrown into figure drawing at 19 years old was daunting, and needless to say, every time we had a male model, I hid in the back away from his "junk" or just left. Very 19 year old boy of me. That was drawing too, we didn't do any drawing in this workshop... lots of massing in and big shapes of bold color.
I really enjoyed the workshop and Marc. He was amazing. It was great to have some friends there as well... my sis Bonne, Margot, Dana, Millie and Pam were all there to witness the "Deconstruction of Dave."
I plan on continuing to work with figures and absorb what I have learned. I am very interested in bettering my skills... looking into ateliers and the infamous Art Students League which has been pulling me to NY for the past decade...

MoonPie, 200
Wow, made it to 200. Thought I would get here a LOT sooner!
Here is the compliment to the RC painting. From Columbus, georgia to Chattanooga, Tennessee. They both share 20" sides in common, so I hope they go to the same place and hang together. These were so much fun to do. I love typography and graphics. Made to look simple and graphic and to be recognizable instantly. I have hand lettered many signs in my day, although I don't know jack about it. I have the right brushes and enamels as well as 10 years of house and mural painting under my belt... but hand lettering is an art unto itself. Mike Malloy does a great deal of it around the Newnan area, he has promised lessons that I plan on taking him up on it. I don't go to YouTube much because I live in the boonies and video takes forever to download, but when I do, I love to look for those guys who do pin striping and custom lettering. There are some amazing videos of those guys doing what they do. Long Live Von Dutch.

Sprayberry's II, 175
An old Newnan Favorite. At one time I had considered naming this series of Sprayberry's signs, "Like Father, Like Son, " but I figured that would be very obscure unless you are from Newnan. My father, David Boyd, Sr.... editorial cartoonist and illustrator for Jeff Foxworthy, drew this pig for them years ago. Although this sign replaced a beautiful, classic Googie Architecture sign complete with flashing wrap-around arrow, I love this sign.

Autumn Road, Land Between the Lakes 168
This piece was based on a phot I took last year in Tennessee/Kentucky in an area called land Between the Lakes. It is a huge preserve that has a very old history and even has buffalo. I started this piece, like most large landscapes, with the thought of doing my usual palette knife work to, but I decided not to at the last minute. I used my new palette with the Vasari grays. I am very pleased with the outcome, but at some point in time, I am going to have to destroy on of the landscapes with the palette knife to see if it is a direction I would like to travel.
This piece will be available at the Southern Palettes Art Auction next weekend.

Jiffy, 144 SOLD
If there is one thing I love to eat, besides ice cream, it would be Jiffy cornbread... with ice cream on it. To make it even more nutritious, use buttermilk and bacon grease. I hope this starts a new direction in subject matter for me, I have a stack of Moon Pies and a fridge full of YooHoo. I tried to paint a Moon Pie in it's wrapper yesterday and it didn't go very well, I actually scraped the painting back, a first for me. I usually try to save it, but this one was too far gone.

Americana
I am taking the day off today, I have traveled to Tennessee to visit Jules' family and then go to Memphis, TN to visit friends with a new baby, I have my painting gear with me, but I elected to play golf at the Tennessean today. Beautiful, hilly course. I highly recommend if you are ever in the Paris, TN area. I hope to post new paintings soon, but I ain't in my schedule this weekend!! I Hope you all have a happy and safe 4th, and for crying out load, stay away from fireworks if you have been drinking! You know who you are....
By the way, this painting sells for $640, I will be willing to part with it for the age of our country this 4th... $233. In case you don't know when when you see one, this is a deal. I'll throw in the gold frame it is in for another $30... Happy 4th!!

Chris Clark Commission 066
I love commission pieces, usually. When the client knows exactly what they want and it requires no creative effort, except for me "doing my thing," are the best. You always run across the client who has no idea what they want and you have to do all the work. This client wanted her husbands logo painted like the Sprayberry's painting I did. She saw it at the fair and knew it was just what she needed for his birthday. She had the card on her and was ready to go! I really enjoyed doing this piece, although I would rather it have been a painting of a sign or business rather than just the logo. Either way, I think it is a great gift idea and I hope that this will catch on with other businesses who would like for me to do the same for them!

Vacation Motel 006
Sorry for the week long delay. I have been painting my eyeballs out and have plenty to share, but I updated software on my Mac and it stopped recognizing my external drive with my pictures on it, then it decided to erase my new iPhoto Library with the newest paintings on it.
This piece goes back to a few tricks I learned when doing the Wyllis Jeep you can see on my site. I painted it upside down for starters, which is much easier that right side up if you can believe that. I put the paint on thickly as usual and the knocked it around with a palette knife, dragging colors into neighboring colors. In the famous words of my favorite artist, Pabo Picasso, "In order to create, you must destroy." How right he was. Anyway, the pieces to follow will also share the same technique with a limited palette. I may be making multiple posts today...

Stand of Pines 001
I have returned to some imagery I haven't painted in some time. I started painting pines when I first started painting seriously in 2005. I have always been drawn to stands of pine trees. I love the negative spaces and the way the trees break up the sky. I am also drawn to the height and vertical nature of them. This piece is the first in a new series of paintings of pine trees, this piece was done on handmade canvas board with a palette knife and is 16"x20". I do these in one sitting, attacking the canvas and moving the paint around with the knife and moving the canvas around, working upside down and sideways. Believe it or not, there is also some red mixed in with the greens to tone them down.
Click on the image to see the knife work, this is why I have abandoned the brush...
