Cemetery Point, Cedar Key

Cemetery Point, Cedar Key, 10x12in, oil on panel, $400
The last of the pieces done in Cedar Key. I am still about a month behind on my posts and we are leaving again for the big trip out west! I am hoping to get out from under the backlog soon!

There is no cemetery in this painting, it is actually behind me. I painted this from a board walk that goes around Cemetery Point and offers a great view of the marsh.

Westward Expansion Online Studio Sale

I am having a "Westward Expansion Studio Sale" this weekend. These include studies and finished pieces that have been filling up space in the studio since we moved.

There are some real gems in here, so I hope you can find something you cannot live without.

All pieces are available by following this link, click on the thumbnail you like and you will see a "buy now" button. Click on that and you can pay through PayPal. If you do not have a PayPal, you can select the option to pay with credit card through PayPal as a guest. Last resort would be to email me and have me mark it as sold, however, someone may get it before I can get to it. You can also navigate the paintings within the large thumbnail images by clicking "next."

If all else fails, go to www.davidboydjr.com, click on paintings and then the westward expansion studio sale collection.

I appreciate your patronage and support!

Cedar Key Marsh

A painter friend, Elsa Sibley, has great place in Cedar Key where we spent most of our time avoiding Tropical Storm Beryl. The place is full of characters and old Cracker Architecture, tons of marshes and great seafood. Sadly, I only painted one plain air piece and the rest were done from the refuge of our dwelling.

Hello, remember Me?

I'm the guy who used to post his painting here... regularly. Good news is that I have not stopped painting, only posting. By the end of the school year I was done with ANYTHING but painting and had even considered asking one of my graduates to intern for me as an assistant so I can just paint. I have found that keeping up with the blog, the website, Pintrest, and Facebook keep me away from where I really want and need to be, behind the easel. I have missed communication with all of you and I am ready to jump back in... baby steps, baby steps.

I have been very busy since my last post. Julie and I have combed just about every inch of Florida and have come back with great sketches and tons of reference photos. We spent most of our time trying to stay away from tropical storms, but we are back home and ready to post!

Neptune Cedar

Did this piece at the Plein Air Affair is St. Simon's late last month. Lot's of palette knife going on here. The knife is great, it covers a lot of territory and you really can only think about the "larger picture." I find it easy to destroy the big design with little brush strokes. This piece is framed and ready to go.

Benn playing around with a limited palette again, gone back to cad yellow light, cad red light, alizarin crimson, ultramarine and black... black being my new favorite color. So, in keeping with the past, I did a "Daily Painting."

My Last Liebster

I gave 4 Liebster Awards last month, so I have 1 more left. The whole point of the award is to give it to a blogging artist who has under 200 followers who inspires you.

I do not give this last one halfheartedly. I was happy with my 4... then I met Kelly Medford at the St Simon's paint-out last month.

Kelly studied here in the states and then moved to Rome to paint en plain air. She has this great rig that includes a Julian half-box easel, her bike and an old umbrella. She has taken the plunge and lives a life I could only with to live if I had the courage. Her work is fantastic and she is just a great person to know!

Here is how it works, please notice that included links from my previous 4 recipients...

As part of the tradition it is passed along to 5 bloggers that have

motivated and inspired you.

To accept the award you must:

1. Link back to the person who gave it to you and thank them

2. Post the award to your blog

3. Give the award to3- 5 bloggers with fewer than 200 followersthat you appreciate and value.

4. Leave a comment on the blogs to let them know that they have been offered this award.

Here is my list of recipients. All of these artists are people I quietly follow and enjoy seeing their work day in and day out. Their work keeps me inspires me and reminds me how important it is to paint everyday.

Here is my list of under 200 bloggers who certainly deserve to be watched more than they are!

Cannon's Point Canopy

Cannon's Point Canopy, 16x20 in, oil on panel, $600, © 2012 David Boyd, Jr.
Did this piece when I got back from the paint out in St. Simon's. The canopy at Cannon's Point was amazing. It was unadulterated. No one had been there to paint in over 30 years. we were so luck y to get in! I was in heaven, I have been drawn to Georgia's coastal canopy since my college days at SCAD. the subject of my first painting was the canopy of the tree outside of my house on Washington Ave.

This afternoon I head out for Apalachicola, FL, the site of the Great American Paint Out. I hope to get on their radar for the invite list next year.

Morning Shimmer

Morning Shimmer, 8x10in, oil on panel, framed, $600, © 2012 David Boyd, Jr.
A couple of weeks ago I was in St. Simons Island, GA for an invitational paint out.... my first. I was nervous, but confident in my skills. I had been painting out quite a bit and had become very comfortable with my palette. Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the beautiful shadow cast by this huge palm tree. The boring light was great, but it came and went... mostly went. I made sure I got a good cell phone image while the sun was out in case I didn't see it again! t knocked this little gem out before 10AM and felt good about my day.

This piece is framed and available at Glynn Arts.

Beside Murphey's

Beside Murphey's, 11"x14", oil on panel, $400

Wanted to get out on the street before I went to St. Simons for the paint out. I thought I would get some privacy tucked in this alley, but "A Horsey Affair" had just started and parents and kids were every where. My students and I actually designed a large fiberglass horse along with 24 other artists and they were placed around the downtown Newnan area.

This marked my brief return to palette knife, which continued through the St. Simons Paint Out. Images to come...

Pura Vida

Pura Vida, 10x12 in, oil on panel, on hold, © David Boyd, Jr.
Did this study when we got back from Costa Rica. I had it put on a t-shirt for the group that went. I will be holding on to this study until I finish the larger piece it has inspired. I have returned to the palette knife as well.

Liebster Blog Award

Happily, I received a Liebster Blog Award from Julie Davis. I had admired Julie's work prior to meeting her at the Christensen workshop last summer. The award put a little spring in my step and reminded me I needed to get back on the blog and just keep going. Thank you so much, Julie!

Costa Rica in Water Miscible Oils

The UGA Ecolodge in San Luis, CR is so deep in the cloud forrest, I could not have my oils shipped. I was afraid to check them in my luggage in case they were confiscated or lost. I also found that I was going to have to walk about 3 hours (total trip) to get any type of mineral spirits.

I elected to use water miscible oils. I had been using them with my high school students and they seemed great and I could find water anywhere. We had been using Windsor and Newton water based oils, but I found them to be thick, so I bought Royal Talens version (the makers of Rembrandt) called Cobra. They were ok, but I would recommend the W & N version, they have been at it for longer. The tubes were thin and 3 of them were punctured before I even got packed, I replaced them with small tubes of W & N and they were much better consistency than the larger tubes.

It took a few paintings to get used to what I could and could not do with the paint, but after the learning curve, I really enjoyed them. Things I learned: don't use natural bristles, they fluff up in water, I used Rosemary and Co Ivory brushes, which are half synthetic and half natural. I also did not enjoy trying to put a ground or wash down, it just got sticky instead of drying of making the next layer of paint slippery.

These paintings are worse for the wear... sand, dirt, bugs and some bad places that happened while packing them across Costa Rica and in the airplane.

Capturing Costa Rica

I made a major decision when traveling to Costa Rica, light on the painting gear, lighter on everything else. So, I left my Nikon SLR and Laptop and traveled with my iPhone and iPad. I was impressed with what I was able to do and how many photos I was able to take and how easy it was to use. I ahem all but abandoned my SLR for my iPhone, I love the camera and I love Instagram! I have paintings to come, but I would love for you to see my photos. Here is the link to my Facebook album, you cannot see it if you are not my friend, so friend me!
