Deere in Maine

Deere in Maine, 30x40, oil on gallery wrap

I saw this tractor on the side of the road in Maine when we were there last year. Every time we drove by I checked out the light on it... then one day it was PERFECT! I jumped out of the car and walked up to take pictures of it from a respectable distance and noticed a guy mowing the lawn. He was just staring at me... I said,"good morning! I am a painter  and would love to take photos of this tractor if I could?" in my nice southern gentlemanly way. He was not impressed. After an awkward pause and an ugly look, he exhaustedly dismissed me with wave of his hand and said, "go ahead!" and not in a nice way.

You never know if the people you come in contact with are gonna be nice or not. 80% of them a more than ok with you taking photos or setting up to paint, 15% of them can be pacified with a statement like the one above, a business card and looking them in the eye when you shake their hand... the other 5% ARE JUST CRAZY. I ran into this situation with parents when I taught... 95% are great... 5% are crazy pants.

Be Careful out there, there are 5 Percenters everywhere!

The Miss Mae

You can't go to Apalachicola, Florida and not paint shrimpers... this is one of my favorite boats to paint in the Mill Pond... the Miss Mae.

Sunset Over the Rocks

Painted this little gem when we got home. I love the sky just to either side of the sunset. I love those colors.

Verlander Pieces...

Everyone needs a celebrity collector, and I just got my first one. Justin Verlander, pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, commissioned these pieces last month. I had done smaller pieces that he saw, but they had already sold. Hope this is the first of many!

Haralson Mill

Haralson Mill, 12x16in, oil on linen, landscape, $725, ©David Boyd, Jr. 2013

This is a great mill complex not far from Riverwood Studios in Senoia, GA. A great deal of The Walking Dead is done in the area and this building was used in the season 3 intro. This place has been getting a ton of traffic, and sadly things have gone missing and the owner lets no one the property anymore. I have been here several times and never encountered a soul... until this day. While taking pictures a van load of "walkers" dropped in to see what was going on. I sent them do downtown Senoia, Old Town Sharpsburg and to the old Brown Steel plant in Newnan. It is excited to see all of the newly emerging interest in these old landmarks, but sad to see them being mistreated.

SOLD Taos Trucking

My largest truck to date, I really enjoy getting big with these pieces. It makes them seem more real, like I can walk up to it, open the door and drive off.

Cedar Key Marsh

A painter friend, Elsa Sibley, has great place in Cedar Key where we spent most of our time avoiding Tropical Storm Beryl. The place is full of characters and old Cracker Architecture, tons of marshes and great seafood. Sadly, I only painted one plain air piece and the rest were done from the refuge of our dwelling.

Neptune Cedar

Did this piece at the Plein Air Affair is St. Simon's late last month. Lot's of palette knife going on here. The knife is great, it covers a lot of territory and you really can only think about the "larger picture." I find it easy to destroy the big design with little brush strokes. This piece is framed and ready to go.

Work from Peggy Root Workshop

From the Barn, oil on raymar panel, 12"x16"
I have been very bad and have not posted in quite sometime. Before the Peggy Root workshop in early October I got a stress fracture in my foot while running (barefoot, begin the ridicule now). I had worked my way out of running shoes because of a 5 year battle with IT band issues. So, no riding and no running for me. Shortly after I injured my wrist and could do nothing! I hobbled around the workshop and struggled with my inability to exercise in the same manner until now... it is weird what an impact exercise had on my mental health. We were also at a destination wedding on St. Simon's Island off the coast of Georgia. So, I am just now beginning to get back to the blog.

This first painting was done under a barn looking out into the woods and a field. It was wet and rainy, and I almost threw this one away after the first day. I believe it is very important to try to rescue a piece as much as I feel it is a good idea to scrap some as well.

Arches

UGA Arches, 11"x14", oil on RyaMar panel, SOLD
Painted this commission for a client who wanted this for her daughter who is currently enrolled at UGA. I had this image from a shoot I did for another client several years ago when I was doing a lot of photography.
