37 Drinks

37 Drinks, The Continental Club, Austin, Texas, oil on museum wrap, 36x48, urban, cityscape, signage, $5400
We met friends in Austin and stayed for a couple of days at the Hotel Saint Cecilia... owned by the same group that owns El Cosmico. No trailers here, just a great place to hang out. Record players in every posh room and a full vinyl library at your fingertips. Jim took me to The Continental Club the first night to see James McMurtry play his standing Wednesday night gig. It was a fantastic stop over and a great way to end a great trip...

Costa Rica Moon Rise

Costa Rica Moon Rise, 24x30, oil on museum wrap, $2150, silhouette, landscape
This is the enlargement I did from a smaller study. This photo does not do it justice. Please remember that all of my pictures from the blog come from my iPhone, so they are not all going to show the beauty of a piece... this one specifically.

Carabelle Morning

Carabelle Morning, oil on museum wrap, 36x48in, $3400
The reference for this piece was taken early in the morning the day of the Great American Paint Out while hunting for subject matter. I decided to stay away from boats since the best plein air boat painters in the business were there. I decided to stick to my thing and i did an alley with a truck at the end. Hodges Soileau actually painted this boat during the paint out and he nailed it.

Whachulookinat

Whachulookinat, 12x12, oil on museum wrap, on hold
A friend went to a chicken show and came back with the most amazing photos of the chickens. They each had so much personality and character. She is allowing me to paint portraits from the images. I am calling the series Chicken Heads. I will not be selling them until the series is completed. I hope to have a 12"x12" and a 24"x24" version of each. Keep watching!

Stand of Pines, Winter Morn

Stand of Pines, Winter Morn, 20x24, oil on museum wrap, $1000
Spent most of last week fretting about the ArtBlink painting event. I was given 90 minutes to produce a piece... and while I was painted, people would be watching and bidding on the outcome. It started with a few small studies and then progressed into this piece. Same size as the one I did for the event, 20"x24". I decided to time myself and take notes along the way so Julie could prompt me as I went to make sure I would finish on time. I also tubed my paint. If I had mixed on site, it would have taken me an hour to mix up enough paint. I mixed a ton of it because I used a palette knife to cover canvas as quickly as I could.

I will have more on the event as I get pictures... I was too busy painting to take photos.

Home II

Inside Out, Home II, 24"x30", oil on museum wrap, NFS
The beginning of something exciting for me here. There is actually a "Home I" that will be put later. This is in the house where I grew up and currently where my parents live. I was lucky to grow up in a home it's age, it gave me a respect for things that were built by hand and loved by the people who live in it. The house was built in 1839. My parents bought it for $25, seriously, and moved to a piece of land they owned in downtown Newnan. It is still a work in progress for them. None of these paintings will be for sale, but I will be doing others that do not have the sentimental value of these.

Everlasting

Everlasting, 11"x14", oil on museum wrap, available at my one man show in November
Got some boxing gloves... obviously. The composition of this one needs a little work, but a great place to start. I love the fluffiness of the glove, but at the same time it has it's hard edge areas as well.

Fenced In, My Latest Project...

Living large. Here is a series of photos from my latest creation. This studio is on lend from my friend and fellow art teacher, Meredith Wilson. I have been using the space to paint my new series of larger works. I have been saving time and money to paint these. As a boy, I saw the work of my parents friend, Lu Steed. They were what seemed to me to be life siZed tractor trailers. They were incredible.

I have long admired the works of the Abstract Expressionist like Pollock, Rothko, Motherwell, Kline and Still. Their painting fill up your senses, standing in front of one is all encompassing, a true experience. Mine are tiny in comparison, but never the less, larger than I have ever worked.

In doing these, I am creating my own collection of these things that I stop to admire along the road and covet. Look for more to come.

Electric Moon 261

Once again the limits of modern photography have been pushed to the limit. There is now way a camera can capture the color in this piece. I tried several times to no avail. There is no way to capture the oranges of the moon and the subtle yellows of the sky around the moon. Guess you have to see it in person!

Used a very different palette just to play around and was blown away by the colors. I used windsor green (Windsor and Newton), cad yellow light (Rembrandt), Quinacridone Red (Gamblin) and some Permalba white.

Stand of Pines in Violets 257 SOLD

Did this monster for an old high school friend of mine and her husband. There had been whispers of a commission of the Pines for a while now. It's is always nice when someone identifies with imagery that is so special to you. These are not done from pictures or even from life. It comes from the heart and from the soul. This one is the largest of the series I have ever completed at 30"x40". It was a challenge, but so much fun!

This picture doesn't do this painting justice. I have 3 more and each one looks different.

Galvaston Caddy 253

Thar she blows! This is the piece I entered for the OPA Eastern US Show... I don't know if it will get in or not. My style and application are pretty wild and don't show a great deal of control... but that's me. I like the loose feel of my work, I have worked very hard for that. The subject matter is strange as well, but you never know! These guys are pretty damn good... the best really. But I feel like there is a place for me in there, but that is up to them.

After looking at the booklet from the national show, I felt like I was ready to at least start trying! This piece will be on hold until after I hear if it made it or not. If it does not, it will be the first David Boyd, Jr. auction piece on EBay

This piece is a departure for me... I painted it on a tinted background... aliZarin Crimson, instead of drawing in great deatil in pencil, I drew rapidly with the brush. I normally do not do an underpainting when I work this large, but I did this time. I also went back to some old palette knives I used to use... both over 3" long. I hope to work larger later this fall, I have some canvas over 6' wide and a couple of large trowels. This piece took several large tubes of Gamblin oils, I am going to need to invest in a great deal more if I work larger.

Lilies I 251

Finally found my groove, it only took all summer. I switched from my little palette knife (1.5") to my larger (3") knife that I used to use. My large pieces we missing energy, they were too tight even though they were loose. Things are funny like that. Looking forward to cranking out a few larger pieces for the OPA regional show this weekend with that in mind. I may be holding pieces more than usual as I feel that I am ready to participate in some of the regional shows. You can't compete if you are selling those key pieces... and I have let too many of those go!
