Woodbine Creek, 6"x8", oil on panel, © David Boyd, Jr
For years I have missed painting this creek down the road from where I grew up. Just a trickle of a creek with the beautiful azaleas. Spring is early this year, I am usually on a trip when they bloom.

Whachulookinat, Large

Whachulookinat, 24"x24", oil on museum wrap, $1200, © David Boyd, Jr.
Did this in a demo last week... obviously I am a little behind.

Getting ready to hit the blog with lots of chickens and studies. I am off to the Georgia Coast for some sea kayaking and painting, the Costa Rice for a week of painting then back to the coast for a paint out. I hope to keep things going on the blog while on the coast, but Costa Rica is another deal altogether. Not much internet in the could forest.

Enjoy the coming posts and I will be back soon...

Another chicken to add to the collection... I like these smaller studies, but I can't wait to knock one of these out with a palette knife!

At Last... Home

Home, 24x30, oil on museum wrap, NFS

Had to hold this piece until was published, so now the cat is out of the bag. This is the front porch of the house I grew up in and was used as an illustration for an article on Southern Hospitality.

Whachulookinat

Whachulookinat, 12x12, oil on museum wrap, on hold
A friend went to a chicken show and came back with the most amazing photos of the chickens. They each had so much personality and character. She is allowing me to paint portraits from the images. I am calling the series Chicken Heads. I will not be selling them until the series is completed. I hope to have a 12"x12" and a 24"x24" version of each. Keep watching!

Stand of Pines, Winter Morn

Stand of Pines, Winter Morn, 20x24, oil on museum wrap, $1000
Spent most of last week fretting about the ArtBlink painting event. I was given 90 minutes to produce a piece... and while I was painted, people would be watching and bidding on the outcome. It started with a few small studies and then progressed into this piece. Same size as the one I did for the event, 20"x24". I decided to time myself and take notes along the way so Julie could prompt me as I went to make sure I would finish on time. I also tubed my paint. If I had mixed on site, it would have taken me an hour to mix up enough paint. I mixed a ton of it because I used a palette knife to cover canvas as quickly as I could.

I will have more on the event as I get pictures... I was too busy painting to take photos.

Sunset Rock

Sunset Rock, 11x14, oil on panel, $500
Took some pictures from Sunset Rock in Highlands, NC before the snow fell. Glad I did, they have come in handy this time of year when my high school students start to paint. I love to be working with what they are working with... the ones who come around and ask questions are the ones I know are interested... no more guessing.

Home II

Inside Out, Home II, 24"x30", oil on museum wrap, NFS
The beginning of something exciting for me here. There is actually a "Home I" that will be put later. This is in the house where I grew up and currently where my parents live. I was lucky to grow up in a home it's age, it gave me a respect for things that were built by hand and loved by the people who live in it. The house was built in 1839. My parents bought it for $25, seriously, and moved to a piece of land they owned in downtown Newnan. It is still a work in progress for them. None of these paintings will be for sale, but I will be doing others that do not have the sentimental value of these.

Stand of Pines, Winter Morn

Stand of Pines, Winter Morn, 10"x12", oil on RayMar panel,  $450
Study for ArtBlink at the UAB Cancer Center this weekend in Birmingham. I will have 90 minutes to paint a larger piece from this study. I want to make sure I work out all the kinks so I don't have to think too much. I thought a small study with the perfect colors would be better than anything. At the end of the 90 minutes, all 20 artists must stop painting and the pieces are auction off. It is actually a silent auction and the bidding occurs while I work. Julie will be talking me up to the patrons and at the end, we will see what a piece of mine will pull in during a competitive bidding. Should be as close as Sotheby's as I will get in my lifetime!

Accepted

Glad to announce that I was accepted to the Glynn Art Paint Out this April. The event takes place on St. Simons Island, GA just south of my old stomping ground, Savannah.

The event will begin Tuesday, April 17 and culminate in a sale and reception Saturday evening. This is my first plain air paint out event and I am nervous and excited. I will be coming in on the heels of painting in that area three weeks prior and then 7 days in the cloud forests of Costa Rice, needless to say, I should be primed and ready!

Merry Merry

I have a boatload of commission I did for people over the holiday, and now the cat is out of the bag. I painted this piece for a client whose husband collects tractors. This is his favorite, a gas powered Farmall Super M. Easily my favorite tractor as well, a true beast. This one was aged just right and still put to use. This tractor was his uncles and the tractor he learned to drive on.
