Artist Workshop Abroad 2015: Plein Air and Still Life in the south of France!!
I am excited to announce a wonderful workshop opportunity in France this summer.
Charles Cashwell and I will be splitting time everyday with a group of artists from June 8th until 12th in a beautiful castle in LaMure in the South of France. He will teach still life and I will be teaching plein air.
Registration is open now and the deadline for deposits is February 28th. For more information you can visit our website or call 770.312.5532. The total cost of the workshop is $1975.

SOLD Two Tubs and a Door, Day 11
From some reference taken in rural Georgia in an old abandoned building. I would love to do a series of paintings based on these. Guess that's why these little studies keep happening. It's interesting to see what bubbles up for the sub conscience mind.

Study from reference on Skidaway Island. Such a great spot, just off to the right is the river. The trees I am standing in have been subjects of several painting I have done. This is a quiet morning after chaperoning 52 7th graders for 3 nights a 4 days!

SOLD The Storm After the Storm, Day 10
Working with some urban references from NOLA. Still haven't found my way outside yet and I am disappointed with myself. I knew the challenge would be hard, but getting outside has been impossible. We were in Savannah and Charleston all weekend delivering paintings and chatting about the upcoming Savannah air event. I know we aren't even halfway, so I have to keep my head up and remember I set the bar at half of these being done outside.

Down the Road, Day 5
Mixing it up again... the pieces I had for day 5 and 6 were not interesting to me today. I may try to save them or I may just paint 32 instead of 30! I am still a few day ahead and have time to do pieces that I would want to share if I have enough. I would love to do this one larger, so if you are interested, let me know! I will be painting it one way or the other.

SOLD The Basement Door, Day 4
I am mixing it up a bit, that was actually painting 12. Sorry for the glare, it's rainy here and its hard to get a good shot without the sheen coming through!
My father owned a small printing company, The Print Shoppe, that I cut my teeth in as a boy. He used the printing company as a way to distribute his editorial cartoons as he was self syndicated. I learned how to use an offset printing press, I developed printing plates, I did layouts using light tables and a xacto knives, I used industrial paper cutters, learned to make pads of paper, create halftone screens in the darkroom, all kinds of good stuff that has really come in handy this day and age... especially being able to write upside down and being able to read in mirror reverse. This was before the computer age. Once that dawned, my father got out of the business. He had been illustrating for Jeff Foxworthy for a few years and no longer needed to support the family with the printing business, although it was dying out.
I wish I still had all of that old equipment, I think offset is comping back in a boutique kind of way. I miss the smell of a print shop.
Growing up in a business off the court square in a small southern town certainly has influenced my subject matter. I walked through this door more times than I can count as a boy and as a man.

Field Study, Day 2
We have beautiful fields here in this part of Georgia. Lots of cattle and horse farms. If you get out far and high enough you can almost pretend like you can see mountains! Distance is hard to come by, but the amount of humidity in the air can make things close look very atmospheric... thus the little bit of violet in the far trees. SOLD The Market, Day 1, 30 in 30 Challenge
Here is the first installment of the 30 and 30 Challenge. I still have a lot of ideas and thought floating around in my head, not so much about what to paint, that's the easy part, but where to sell? On DailyPaintworks, here on my blog, on my website?? All of the above? I am sure that the answer will present itself in due time!
For the 30 in 30 challenge I want to be as realistic as I can be while pushing myself. I paint everyday, so that is not an issue, but I also teach full time and don't always have as much time as I would like. I have decided to try a few things in the 30 in 30... paint about half of the images en plain air, work on my color harmony and use of color in my landscapes and urban scenes and, finally, work on my interiors. I can also see doing a whole 30 in 30 on my own of interiors.
I am just going to keep it loose and use these guidelines to narrow my focus but not limit myself.
Glad to have some friends joining me in this challenge!
