Low Tide, Playing with the Palette Knife

Low Tide, oil on canvas, 16x20in, $1000
Been working very hard to try to marry my aggressive impasto, brushwork and knifework from the studio into the open air. I set up my Glouchester style easel and used a handheld palette and palette knife to see how quickly I could turn out a 16x20. I want to work larger outdoors but also want it to look more like what I do in the studio. I don't want to spend hours upon hours outdoors working on a large piece, I want to rock it out in a couple hours and be done with it. We will see how it works...

Donated this piece to an auction to support the Serenbe Playhouse set in the beautiful Serenbe community not far from Atlanta. I am actually on the board at the Serenbe Photography Center and have been glad to help support the arts in the cool community. It's a beautiful place to paint as well...

St. Joe Sunrise, quick study, oil on linen, NFS, commissions of this piece accepted
I saw James Hempel painting the sunrise when I was on my way out for the QuickDraw at the Forgotten Coast. I was inspired by his passion so I decided to pull over down the road and painted this "warm-up" piece in the car. This was the last time I saw the sun that day.

Carabella Dockside

Carabella Dockside, 11x14in, oil on InnerGlow panel, $675, unframed
This is on the flipside of the painting posted yesterday. Don't know if its gonna be a 2 for 1 deal or a 2 for 2 deal :)??

Rust in Prussian Blue

Rust in Prussian Blue, 11x14in, oil on InnerGlow panel, $675
This was a limited palette experiment... just trying to create a mood with prussian blue, transparent red oxide and yellow ochre. This InnerGlow panel has two sides... sadly I painted this and the painting I am posting on the same panel... guess we will see what happens!

Good news from the Forgotten Coast

Well, the weekend paid off. I was so excited to win the Best Emerging Artist at the Forgotten Coast QuickDraw a couple of weeks ago. My plan was to keep going down until I placed and hopefully capture enough attention to make the invite list.

I was honored to share the podium with some of my heros like Ken DeWaard and Morgan Samuel Price.

It was a wet paint out, I wound up painting in torrential rain by the beach a St. Joseph State Park near Cape San Blas. I had to "borrow" a trash bag from a nearby trash can because I left my raincoat in the hotel room... and I tell you what... it was the the best raincoat I ever had. I now have a box of them in the pack of the 4Runner.

The painting didn't sell at the event but it was sold by the time I made it home. It's nice to have collectors who really know which pieces to buy to add to their collections.

Off to the Forgotten Coast

Heads up to all you folks I met in Appalachicola last year, I will be headed down to your neck of the woods Friday to participate in the Quick Draw in Carabella this Saturday. Come say hello. This time I will not be in an alley, I'll be down by the boats.

Moonrise at Callaway

Having some fun with Prussian blue and photo reference from the Callaway Gardens Paint Out.

Something a Little Different

I have made a page on my website that contains my photography. I have selected photographs that will be for sale as limited editions of 20 per image. All images are for sale directly from my website and are 12"x12" printed on archival, 100% rag paper. They are also available at any size you like and on any material... like gallery wrapped canvas. If you are interested in something different from what is available, contact me. I hope that you will have a look and share the page with anyone who may be interested!

Grayton Beach FL

I am going to catch you up on my latest obsession... 5x7in paintings done on my Guerrilla thumb box. My goal is to have 365 of these by the end if the year. I'm not trying to do one a day, some days I do more... Some days less. Takes some pressure off. Most are done Plein air, but some from my phone. It's a great size, I can do a great little study in 30 minutes or less... In the car, on the beach or on the sofa! They do not interfere with larger studio work.

None of these will be for sale. If you are interested in a large piece inspired by one of these studies, please email me at rdboyd2@mac.com

A REAL Inside Look?

Blogging has become very antiquated and time consuming to me. The only upside to it is YOU! I have been so busy with my full time teaching gig, full time painting gig, traveling and my wife... I just don't have time to blog. I need to dedicate and MAKE more time, just like I do for painting and everything else that is important to me. I have talked about rededication to blogging more times than I can count, one day it will stick.

Originally blogs were designed for online diary keeping, but there is so much more out there... photos, video, etc. There are easier ways of getting them online as well. Although I plan on "rededicating" myself to the blog I want to you also consider following me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. They are easier to use and you much better content because of that. I am addicted to Instagram and find it to be the medium I enjoy using the most... and that is taking pictures. I post 2-3 pictures a day from my students in the classroom, my studio at home, my adventures with my wife Julie and our travels... and you are kinda missing out right now... and that is my fault.

I will post paintings here for sale and write about them, but if you want to see me everyday while I paint at the Callaway Gardens Paint Out... you won't find it here. I will be on Instagram which posts to my Facebook and Twitter accounts. You want to see my partial hike of the Appalachian trail? My 4 days camping on the Georgia Coast and sea kayaking, my new paint mobile??? Our trip to California in a VW van this summer? The Great American Paint Out Quick Draw? Instagram and Facebook! BTW, you can sign up for Instagram on the website now without having to have it on your phone. I could be wrong!

If you are not on Facebook or Instagram, you should be! If you have no idea what they are or how to use them, let me know and I will be happy to blog about them more in depth.

So, here are the links to my personal Facebook page (I no longer post to my fan or group page) as well as my Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram links. These can also be found on my website.

I hope to see a huge surge in people wanting to see what I am up to!

Costa Rica Moon Rise

Costa Rica Moon Rise, 24x30, oil on museum wrap, $2150, silhouette, landscape
This is the enlargement I did from a smaller study. This photo does not do it justice. Please remember that all of my pictures from the blog come from my iPhone, so they are not all going to show the beauty of a piece... this one specifically.
