The cold rainy weather provided great inspiration for this painting, even better, I could paint it from my studio window!!

Non Objective Abstraction 020
I had some leftover paint on my palette after painting the avocados, and I have made plenty of "mud," so instead of scraping it into the trash, why not put it on a canvas?I have fallen under the spell of Sally Schisler and her knife work, so I decide to give it a spin. I am pleased with the result, however this piece is non-objective.

Field at Sunset 018
I am in that place where I am ready for spring to roll around! The use of pastel colors and green fields are coming from the imagination at full force. I am ready for some Georgia golf weather.

For a Good Cause: Stand of Pines in Ultramarine 015
A Cup a Day 014
Pieces like these remind me of how uncomfortable drawing from life makes me. This is a tell tale sign that I must spend more time drawing!

Fall Corridor 013
All this cold weather and bleakness had me jonesing for some color. This is an improvised piece, it just needed to be done for my sanity...

Kentucky Lake Cedar 012
This piece was inspired by a picture I took while walking the shore line of Kentucky Lake after doing some geocaching with Jules. It was just hanging there, growing out of the shore on the upper water line where the water is during the warm months. It was beautiful and crooked and growing in such a strange direction.

Four in the Distance 011
Small study of a tobacco field in Kentucky. I loved the cedar by the road and the four others in the distance. Beautiful country. Lots of tobacco fields.

Town of Gay Water Tower 010
I painted this piece a few weeks back. It was one of my first attempts at a smaller square piece. It was done from a photo, the day I took the picture it was freezing and strangely windy. Not ideal for plein air. I was drawn to the similarity between the values in the tower and the passing clouds. If I paint from a photo, I love to do them upside down. This was one of them. A friend of mine who is a longtime resident of Gay informed my that before the lettering you see now, it actually read "TOWNOFGAY". Wish I had known that before I painted it.

Oranges 009
I love the look of the warm oranges on the cool gray background. I am working with the brush again, due mostly to the size constraints of the smaller canvas. I am experimenting with bright brushes which is a split from my filberts I loved so. I did knock this one around a bit with the palette knife when I was done.

Shitake 008
I have started to spend more time drawing from life, especially since it has been 15 degrees outside. I need to sharpen my observational and drawing skills. I love fungus, so what a great way to start. Look for me of these small pieces coming soon. I have about 7 pieces that I have done over my MLK holiday weekend, I will be adding them as the days go by and I go back to my day job.

Plein Air Workshop
Plein air workshop "on the farm" in Gay, GA. Limit of 5. Cost is $250 a head, I'll be cookin' lunch and dinner if necessary.
This is a workshop for beginners at the plein air landscape game. We will work small in oils, basics will be covered: palette set-up, composition, color theory, etc. I will also be doing a demo or 2.
Expect a steady flow of ideas, questions and discussions. I will share what I have learned about plein air in the past year or so that I have been working outside.
If the weather is bad, we will be working indoors. I am encouraging only a small group to keep things personal and comfortable.
There is a list of materials, so, if you are interested, please let me know!

Cold Tap 007
I am very excited about this piece. I love the limited palette, the brushwork, and the composition. Painted upside down and moved around with a palette knife at the end.

Vacation Motel 006
Sorry for the week long delay. I have been painting my eyeballs out and have plenty to share, but I updated software on my Mac and it stopped recognizing my external drive with my pictures on it, then it decided to erase my new iPhoto Library with the newest paintings on it.
This piece goes back to a few tricks I learned when doing the Wyllis Jeep you can see on my site. I painted it upside down for starters, which is much easier that right side up if you can believe that. I put the paint on thickly as usual and the knocked it around with a palette knife, dragging colors into neighboring colors. In the famous words of my favorite artist, Pabo Picasso, "In order to create, you must destroy." How right he was. Anyway, the pieces to follow will also share the same technique with a limited palette. I may be making multiple posts today...

Stand of Pines in Daylight 005
I bought this elongated canvas the other day and was very excited about using it. This piece still needs a bit of work, the light source isn't quite right, but I was please with the dramatic effect of the canvas size and shape.
