Last Light

Last Light, 18x24in, oil on linen panel

Here is my first work up from the smaller 5x7 sketches. This is not the first painting of the year, there is more to come! I am holding on to this one for some competitions I am planning on entering. I have taken the month of January to paint for me... commissions have taken a back seat until the beginning of February.

Outside Paris

Outside paris, oil on linen, 5x7, available when the larger studio piece is complete
The morning before Thanksgiving I was ROR into the wild while Julie and her mom cooked. I took my thumbbox and went to a spot I have been eyeballing since we came through earlier in the fall. It was a spot I would never paint outside of the car because of a blind hill and flying cars. I sat in the comfort of the car, warm, listening to music and painting. It was very nice, though I missed the cool air and the sounds around me.

This was done from a photo I shot on Julie's mother's land in Tennessee on Kentucky Lake. Beautiful sunset site but I was trapped with only my camera and no thumb box!

Delta Morning

Delta Morning, oil on panel, 6x8, $150, landscape
I really fell in love with the delta the morning we left. It was a bit overcast and the landscape was wet from a morning rain. The colors were incredibly rich and there was an amazing smell of "things growing and decaying" in the air.

In the Moonlight

In the Moonlight, 11x14in, oil on panel, NFS, study, nocturne, landscape
My first plein air nocturne done with Roger and Greg. Millie Gosch and Craig Reynolds were also brave enough to join us. A little blue, but Thats what I picked up... just blue and white. I knew I could only focus on the big shapes. I enjoyed this more than any painting I have done with the sun up. Again, if you are interested in a larger piece based on this, let me know.

New Committments

I have been playing around with the idea of smaller studies and doing a series of small, consecutive daily paintings. I have a small Julian 6x8 thumb box that I had to modify to make it work correctly, but that was even too big. I wanted something I could carry with me every day. I picked the Guerilla Box 5x7 and it has been great. I got the kit from Utrecht and added the tripod attachment. I have used it in my lap in the car, outdoors and even on a tripod. I have been using my spoils from AIS, my Michael Harding paint to round out the kit. If you like safflower based paints, they are hard to beat. I'll let you know when I man up and try to do 30 days in a row... Pretty sure that's all Ivan handle outdoors.

Back in the Saddle

It has been a whirlwind around here since the end of October and the opening of the show, I have some serious catching up to do with the blog and the website. Having 2 full times jobs requires something to fall by the wayside and my online life has been cast aside. Changes have been made to keep this thing rolling and you should start to see more consistency from me!

The show was a raging success, selling 34 out of 70 pieces. Now that it is down, I am trying to find homes for all the unsold pieces. Not lang after the show I participated in a workshop with 2 of my favorite artists, Roger Dale Brown and Greg Larock. Not long after that, a trip to AIS National in Indianapolis where I received an Honorable Mention from Judge, Kevin MacPherson... mind-blowing. I quick stop over in Clarksdale, MS for some photo opportunities and time with my old man.

Did I mention I paint full time and teach grades 7-12? Lots of paintings and experiments to unfold in the future.

Looking forward to bringing you all up to speed.

Forbidden Fruit

This barn is part if a farm here in newnan that is no longer occupied. There are several buildings on the property, but no one is allowed on to paint it... Which is a shame. This was done from a quickly snapped cell phone image from a moving car.
