The New "Rig"

Here is my new Open Box M panel holder. It was well worth the weight and really works better for the way I like to paint than any of the other systems I have used... and I have used them all with the exception of the Glouchester. I started with a half Julian, then a full, a Guerilla box and most recently and for the longest, James Coulter and his Art Box and Panel system. I was looking at the EasyL Versa but the ones I have seen and felt were very heavy and kinda clunky.

The box is 12"x16", beautifully made and it smells like heaven. I have used it outdoor on 6 occasions and in the studio the same amount. It is comfortable in all setting.

  1. Hi David, your jeep paintings are great. Love your paint application in separated color notes. If you don't mind, how in your opinion is the Open Box M better than the Coulter System? I've been thinking about replacing my EasyL with something lighter. Thanks

  3. first off, i have to say that the Coulter System has been my favorite of them all... until now! I use a tabouret at home, so mixing flat at waist level seemed natural. With the Open M, I can have the palette and the panel on the same plane, so hitting the correct notes and values seemed easier to me. Also, the biggest problem I had with my Coutler, at it really isn't that big of a deal, was when I paint into the sun, light was on my palette. I had to use an umbrella to keep the light off or clamp an extra panel to shade the palette. I will say that the Coulter was and is much easier to set up and get painting with. I have 2 Coulter boxes and I use tham all the time in the studio. I love the 12"x16", I like to paint large outside with lots of paint, but I also hope to get a smaller Open M. Hope this answers the questions!

  4. I really like my Open M (10x12)box for plein air. It's light and small enough to fit into my day pack!
    Nice work!
